According to Wikipedia (2014), "The term FODMAP is an acronym, deriving from "Fermentable, Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides And Polyols." These carbohydrates are commonly found in the modern western diet". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FODMAP)
In Wikepedia (2014) it is explained that, "FODMAPs are short chain carbohydrates (oligosaccharides), disaccharides, monosaccharides and related alcohols that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine. These include short chain (oligo-) saccharide polymers of fructose (fructans) and galactose (galactans), disaccharides (lactose), monosaccharides (fructose), and sugar alcohols (polyols) such as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol and maltitol." Cookbooks
When I get a cookbook, I know I will need to do some adapting and some I just won't be able to use at all. For FODMAPs I always had the best luck with Gluten Free and Vegan cookbooks, especially if they are both. I am happy if I get two or three recipes to add to my repertoire.

Tasty Low-FODMAPs Products
Bread
- Udi's Gluten Free White Sandwich Bread See post of Oct 30, 2010 This is really great bread if you're following a low FODMAPs vegetarian diet. (http://www.pheelingphoody.blogspot.com/2010/10/udis-gfcf-bread.html) Find it at Stop and Shop, Whole Foods, and Trader Joes.
- Food for Life Gluten Fee English Muffins are wonderful for a Low FODSMAPS vegan diet. I buy them at The Good Health Store, and Whole Foods.
- You can make breadcrumbs out of any toasted gluten free bread-- it crumbles easily!
- Sunshine Burgers are a great vegan low FODMAPs option. See post of Mar 7, 2010(http://pheelingphoody.blogspot.com/2010/03/sunshine-burgers-vegan-dairy-free-wheat.html). I buy these at Hanneford or the Good Health Store.
Breakfast
- McCann's Steel Cut Irish Oats (not, not appropriate for people with Celiac as there may be some cross-contamination with gluten)
- Corn Chex by General Mills
- Rice Chex by General Mills
Chips
- Kettle Brand Baked Potato Chips - A good salty GFCF treat.
- Riceworks Gourmet Brown Rice Crisps - Really good chips, I especially like the Sweet Chili flavor, that is a good Doritos alternative. They are very high in fat though :(. I find them in the chip aisle Hannaford or Stop & Shop.
- Glutino Gluten Free Crackers - These are a nice Ritz alternative. They are high in fat, but are a nice staple to have around. Their good with tuna salad and with green salad.
Margarine
- Earth Balance Soy Free - Vegan and pretty good
- Helman's (Best Foods on West Coast) Helman's regular or light mayonnaise. There are other mayonnaise brands that are safe, I just happen to like this one.
- After the elimination phase I did occasionally indulge in the soy based vegan mayonnaise choices.
- Tinkyada Pasta Joy Brown Rice Pasta - The brown rice pasta is better than the white rice pasta. When I ate wheat I preferred the long pastas (spaghetti, linguini), but the short shapes are better with the gluten free stuff. I like spirals. I recommend cooking for less time than the package suggests-- if it says 15-16 minutes I cook it for 9-10 minutes. Be sure to rinse with cool water. It doesn't last as long left over as wheat pasta. If eating left over be sure to really heat it up before eating-- you'll have to heat it to the point that it's too hot to eat and then let it cool.
- Trader Joe's Corn Pasta - this is really good low FODMAPs pasta and at a very reasonable price.
